Hello, yesterday when I was on the highway I had to come to an unexpected stop from 70 to 0. I don’t think I applied the brakes to 100 percent but it was pretty close. When I was almost about stopped I heard my tires start making a skidding noise and I didn’t feel and pulsation in the pedal from abs. I’m not sure if I just wasn’t focused on it and it did or if it actually didn’t engage. The front tires are around 400 miles old and the rear tires have around 10k miles on them. Front tires are a month a couple months old and the rear are a year old. There is no abs light on but I’m just concerned, I don’t want to be driving around without abs. Does a squealing/skidding noise indicate loss of grip or could it just be the tires making noise due to the extreme pressure on the tires.

Anti lock brakes are activated by signals from your wheel speed sensors. For differant reasons theses sensors cannot report speeds under 5 mph. Newer and different vehicles have different cut out speeds. If sensors do not provide a signal or the ABS module refuses to accept a signal within certain parameters antilock brakes will not activate. All this to say that it is perfectly normal for no antilock braking at low speeds. From 70 to 0 on hard braking your vehicle did axactly as it was designed to do. If you want to have more reassurance, find a dirt road, at about 25 mpg, do an emergency stop and you will find the same behavior.
