I have a 2011 328i, driven daily by my wife.

It began throwing codes and an obvious misfire. Code was P0303 misfire on Cylinder 3.

      So I swapped the #1 and #3 coils. Now I have 6 codes. P0303, P0301, (2 each) and P0305 and P0300

P0301 is cylinder 1 misfire. 0303 is cylinder 5 and 0300 is multiple misfires.

This looks to be a more significant problem than coils or plugs. Ideas? Help???

I need the thin wall socket to get at the plugs. But that would be next.

Update: I pulled all three supposedly bad cylinder packs. Hit them each with electrical parts cleaner and reassembled.

The only code thrown was p0301. So I am thinking that the rough running triggered the other codes.
          Am I just deluding myself?

you can get a lot of info from the spark plugs… you can always buy a spark plug socket see if it fits and posiblly grind it doen if it dontnt fit.. but I havnt ever see the correct size sprk socket wall being to thick…I think advance auto sells them for a $1

I agree with rob781, do what you have to do to pull the plugs out.
I had a friends 2001 v6 accord throw misfire codes constantly when he first bought it. We put new plugs in it and its been running trouble free for almost 2 years.

                FIXED —

After the last go ’round with the scan tool, I was convinced that the bad running was triggering the misfire readings in other cylinders.

Since the #3 was now good, I switched out the coil which I originally thought was bad. Voila. Runs like a champ – no codes.

So here is a case where the diagnosis made matters worse before they got better.

BTW — I went with the NAPA house brand Echlin – mostly because it was available and the car needs to run. The repair is pretty easy once you get access. Access is a bear – you need to remove a bunch of shielding holding the cabin air filter etc.

Glad you got it fixed. Normally you see a bit of cracking on the pack if its gone or going bad. Echlin is good stuff, well it is over here the german car specialists use echlin parts if owners don’t want to spring for OEM.
