      Hey guys,

Had some issues over the past few months and got some maintenance done on my 2010 Grand Cherokee, and pulling into my driveway the other day I noticed a weird sound. I went ahead and recorded it here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63BspmZPioQ
      – its faint but you can definitely hear some sort of tinny noise. This only happens when I have the steering wheel turned all the way to the right. I’ve had my front end checked over as I thought it was a CV or something going on with the axle — nada, they suggested I have a transmission shop take a look at it. The transmission shop looked at it, didn’t see any visible leaks, and replaced the tcase fluid because I was there and figured it needed to be done. Still making noise. Anyone seen/heard something like this before? This is the 3.6L with the always on 4X4 @95K miles. Any help would be appreciated.

      Ryan

I can barely hear something faint, but it’s really hard to tell with the tires and asphalt rock making most of the noise. It almost sounds like a lug nut in a center cap. Have you tried jacking the front end up and turning the wheels in different positions while spinning the tires by hand?

Yeah unfortunately I don’t have a jack to get it up but I did check for anything loose. I should mention it only happens turning hard right, I would figure anything like that would make noise regardless what direction I turn.

Total guess: U-joints on one of the driveshafts. Only happens at full lock, with the constant 4X4, perhaps it’s binding up a little. If you can grease the u-joints try that (some are sealed and you can’t do anything with them.) The last two Jeeps I had, you could grease them.

With noises, especially seemingly random rotational noises, you just have to go through the steps of eliminating everything one by one. If you have someone that can help you by standing outside and listening it can greatly help narrowing down the source.
