      Hello fellow ETCG fans,

I have a 2010 ford focus, it’s been a few days since I’ve noticed it has started idling lower than usual (around 500rpm), I have also noticed a few instances of me driving down the road and the engine slows down significantly only to come back up at speed a second later. Initially I thought it was a one off issue but yesterday as I was leaving the highway on a ramp and came to a stop, the car actually stalled, I was able to turn it back on but it still worries me since it’s never done that in two years of ownership. I’ve driven it since then and it hasn’t stalled but even at stop lights the car idles around the 500 rpm range which is kind of low for my car. I can barely hear the engine at a stop light which is odd since I don’t ever remember it being that quiet (and it’s not a hybrid). There aren’t any dash lights currently on, any suggestions ? I’ve heard EGR valve possibly but i’m open to ideas

      Thanks,

      Edoardo

Have you had any maintenance done recently? It sounds like possibly you have some carbon build up on the throttle plate which is now sticking. If you have not had any maintenance, I would start by inspecting the throttle body and cleaning it if necessary.

I recently got an oil change done at one of those quick oil change places (yes I should have known better) and it happened the day I picked the car up so I suspect something happened there , I might take it to a more capable mechanic or the dealership

Thanks for the suggestion, I was taking the intake off to remove the hose that goes to the throttle body and it turns out that the air filter was put in slightly sideways, I put it back to its rightful position, started the car and it seems to run normal again (even took it for a test drive at different speeds and it seemed happy), I don’t know if that was the issue but it seems to have fixed the problem, will provide updates if this happens again

Yeah those quick lube places will check your air filter and other fluids. I guess the “tech” didn’t bother putting the filter back in correctly. They also use cheap, crappy oil filters.

They also overtighten and strip pan threads, or fail to tighten them at all. Directly experienced both of those. Hard pass.
