2009 jeep Wrangler “COIL PACK”

      Hello Friends,
      So my 2009 Wrangler shakes very badly when driving.
      Took it to the repair shop they told me I need a “Coil Pack”. My question is it same as “ignition coil”? when I replace the coil pack, do I need to tune or program anything? or its just a plug in replacement?

      The shop says it needs “MAJOR TUNE UP” for $633, do I really need to tune up anything or it is just to rip me off

        [/quote] Yes it is your “ignition coil”. If by major tune up they mean replace the coil pack, wires and plugs then I agree with them, provided they know it’s a ignition issue. A “tune up” is not like what it was in the old days. Replacing the coil pack is a plug-in replacement in most cases. If you are handy, this is an easy job.

          Yes you are right, he is going to change the spark plugs, wire sets, coil pack. Do I really need to change the spark plug and the wires with the coil pack?
          Also, he wrote down on the receipt (3-step fuel system cleaner soltech 35003) + fuel system tune up. Do you have any idea what these other two jobs are and whether they are necessary or not.

            thank you[/quote] It sounds to me like they are taking a shot in the dark on what’s causing the misfire. Trust me, you don’t need fuel system cleaning service with today’s fuels. Just use some Chevron Techron in the tank every once in a while for good measure. Now, back to ignition, yes I would replace plugs and wires with the coil especially if they have been in there a while. Still, how did they diagnose it as an ignition issue? It sounds like they are just throwing parts and services at it in hope of a fix.

              I totally agree with you, I am not sure how did they diagnose that. BTW, I change the spark plugs last August.
              When they say “wire set” when wires exactly? if I want to buy/order them what to look for? are they easy to change?

                A wireset would be the wires between the spark plugs and the coil pack. “Tune up” is a hold-over term from when mechanics used to actually make real-time adjustments in the pre-computer days. These days on modern vehicles it just means replacement of routine maintenance parts, more or less. Sometimes there are still a few adjustments that can be made on things like a TPS or IAC, but generally it’s just swapping parts.

You don’t want to connect the wires to the wrong plug or to the wrong terminal on the coil pack. It is possible that if the gaps were incorrect, the coil got toasted. If you replaced the plugs in August, I would still pull them and check them. Reading the plugs will tell alot of the story. If we have deposits or a rich or lean condition showing up from the reading, then we could go from there.
