I am at my wits end with this car. It’s an 09 Impala with 126k. I found that my ps fluid was leaking (again) and my pump was noisy (again) so I replaced both the pump (3rd one) and the high pressure line. Now the steering is effortless and quiet but there’s still fluid leaking. It’s looks like it’s leaking from the pump area and to make matters worse, fluid is soaking the belt causing it to slip! I’ve quadruple checked everything. The pump looks fine, all the o rings are new and aren’t leaking, the pressure line is not leaking, and the hose clamps are tight. By the way this job literally took us around 7 hours to do because the line is ridiculously difficult to fit under the car. Also, I’m bleeding the fluid correctly I think lol. Any suggestions guys? Thanks in advance!

Never fear to check the obvious. Are you certain that none of the o-rings/gaskets were doubled up? Did you lube the gaskets prior to running fluid through the system? Only other thing I can think of is just to verify the right fluid is used through the owners manual. Seems if more than one replacement has leaked, it would have to be one of those issues.

I’ll also put out there that not all parts are created equal. If you’re using cheap parts, you may be seeing cheap results.

Don’t rule out an installation problem. As suggested, you might want to check for doubled up ‘o’ rings or things like that which could be causing the leak.

Any time power steering fluid gets low, the pump will cry out in pain. No matter the make.

There is a bit of good news, due to the pressure in power steering systems it’s one of the easiest to fond leaks in. Thoroughly clean the area, top up the fluid and start the car to check for leaks. You shouldn’t need to steer it or anything, just watch for the leak. If you don’t have any of the proper power steering fluid handy, you can substitute any ATF.

Does the return line have a simple spring clamp on it? They can lose their spring or be difficult to properly install. A decent quality screw type clamp would work well. If the pump and reservoir are 2 separate pieces, installed together either by you or not, that seal can leak.
