My friend has a 2008 VW R32 with only 40,000 miles that’s been sitting in my garage for over half year now.

Here is a video of me cranking it. You can clearly hear the fuel pump priming when I turn the ignition ON.

I have VAGCOM, and it shows no codes what so ever.
Things I have done so far:
Changed all sparks & ignition coil
Changed crank position sensor
Changed fuel filter
Added 5 gal of fuel
Sprayed starting fluid into the throttle body.
Checked all fuse & relay
Checked for spark ( there was a faint glow with the spark tester, but when I grounded the spark plug, nothing happened. )

The fuel pump is good for sure. I can clearly hear it working, and there is fuel flow when I disconnect the hose going to the fuel rail.

I’ve made threads on VWVortex, but no one there was able to find the cause.

Have you scanned the car for any codes? Does the security/
immobilizer light stay on? Try holding your foot to the floor
while starting.

Yes I scanned the car, there’s no code. No, the immobilizer is not active (I can check the status via VAGCOM).
Tried starting with foot on the brake, made no difference.

The ignition system on this car is a very different than the video you linked. I’m not sure what to look for.

And I like to add, the engine does run for a brief moment sometimes then dies on its own.

Just a few question. Have u looked at the plugs affter u tried to start the car? What happens when u try to start the car after using starter fluid

I have not, but I’ve changed all six spark plugs since the recommended service was at 40,000 miles.
Here is a picture of the old plugs.

Starter fluid did nothing; the car would crank the same way like before. I sprayed it directly into the throttle body with someone stepping on the throttle.

Since the car sat in a garage for an extended period you might take a real good look around at the wiring under the hood. I know it’s not easy to see most of it on that car but it’s possible that mice have been feasting on the wiring somewhere.

Mice just love German cuisine.

I checked most wiring that I can see. I will try again and look for them again.

I really don’t think there’s any mice in my garage, as delicious as German cuisine may be 😉 . My cat likes to sneak into my garage all the time, so I don’t think any mice would consider sticking around there.

Just to clarify, the car was in storage last winter. It ran fine the first few days in the spring, then one day it just decided to stop running in middle of the day. It’s been sitting ever since.

I have seen gas that has been stored for a long time in plastic gas cans to be carrying a significant amount of dissolved plastic. Enough to leave a thick yellow plasticy deposit in the bottom of a lawnmower’s float bowl and enough to make the intake valve stick solid. I hope you didn’t add old gas to the tank.

It’s time to measure the fuel pressure and see if the injectors are squirting.

That’s a good point, but I have always used Stabil whenever a car is in storage. Never had any problem until now.

2 things I would check after reading what you’ve done.

1- purge all of the old gas in the car. Get some new stuff with some cleaner in it too. VR6 engines aren’t picky but its not your old Ford pick up engine either. If you haven’t already you may want to remove the fuel rail for one bank of cylinders and see if its actually delivering fuel. If either pressure regulator is varnished up no fuel will flow and that wont set off a code.

2- Make sure that battery is in good health. Bosch systems need at least 12v minimum for the ECU to even turn on. With just the ignition on it may have enough juice to power up the coil and the VagComm but while cranking it may drop. A weak spark with all new stuff to me also sounds like you could have a bad ground also. Grab a jumper cable and add a ground to the block somewear and the battery neg.

The car just started on its own and stayed running this time.
I even managed to take it around the block. Other than flat spotted tire, I don’t feel anything wrong with the car.

I believe there’s something in the exhaust since I smell a strange sour odor.
I will drop the pipes and take a look tomorrow and update.

Thanks all for the help. 🙂

My cat runs the other way when she sees a mouse… 😆

Sounds like either old gas smell, or something craweled up and made a home.

Sort the tire issue out go fill it up with 94octane, a bottle of cleaner and then drive it high in the revs for an hour or so. Get lots of fuel spray. She’ll feel brand new after.

Several years a go I left my VW parked for a long wait while I was off traveling. In previous times I had arranged for a roommate to drive it one day a week jut to keep her happy. This time I had no option. When I got home it ran like such a bag of nails. Ended up draining the tank out, flushing the fuel line, new fuel filter. The condensation that had collected in the crank case was disturbing when I drained that out too. The only thing that managed to work out was that I left it on jack stands with a cover so it wasn’t too dank inside and the tires were round still. Put a charge on the battery for a day Gave it a good oil change even though it ran like ass, made sure the brakes and clutch worked, half filled the tank with 91oct and 2 bottles of cleaner and then drove it at 4000rpm in 4th gear for an hour one way, then the other. All problems solved.
