OK, a little bit of background, I recently changed the spark plugs in the vehicle, which required me to remove the intake manifold, no problem. However, just Sunday morning, while I put the car in reverse, I get a bad noise from the engine, and I can feel the vibration in the brake pedal, this only occurs in reverse, no other gear. Im thinking it cant be the plugs or anything, because it would happen in other gears as well. I had to remove the throttle body to change the plugs, as per instructions, which included removing some hoses. So, could I have a vacuum leak? Or something more serious? Ive already brought the car to a shop and they didnt know what to tell me, other than put ngk plugs in the engine. I have autolites in now, the autozone guy recommended those for my vehicle

      Thank you.

IMHO if it was the plugs it would be a problem in forward gears as well, like you said

Whenever I have to dissassemble things I put everything back in the exact opposite order, and I go over everything afterwards to make sure nothing is loose or forgotten. Sometimes because my memory can fail me I write a list of things I have unplugged or loosened and it prompts me to check things before I drive the car. Go back over everything you touched and make sure it’s all okay

I’d say its a total coincidence. Check all your callipers aren’t seized and that the pads/discs have life left in them.

Im pretty sure the brakes are fine, as well as the calipers. Otherwise, it would happen in drive as well.

              Hi mate,

that depends on many factors. Be certain, not pretty sure, as I cant think of much else that’s this cheap and that could really cause this problem.

My approach to stuff is think logically, slowly and try the cheap stuff first. Get yourself the kettle on, make a cuppa (you can tell I’m English right? that should be the first instruction in any workshop manual I think!) get your jack and jack stands (axle stands whatever!)out and the copper grease. Give everything a clean up and re-grease the BACK (not the friction face) of the pads but don’t go OTT and slather it everywhere.

Apologies if any of that is patronizing, but I wanted to make sure Im coming across ok.

check your rear brakes.I don’t know if you have drum or disc?
you could jack up the rear of the car and spin the wheels and
see if they are free or dragging. As for the spark plugs.Nissan
likes NGK. those plugs should have gone 100k before a change.
does the car idle High now? is the check engine light on? try
                checking for vacuum leaks.

The check engine light isnt on and the car has 96500 miles on it. I was getting a squeaking noise and a rough sounding noise in drive, so I changed the plugs, and that has went away. Just this reverse noise now. I have drums in the back, unfortunately, I will try to check for vacuum leaks later today. And no, the car idles normally. I have another issue with the ac, sometimes when I turn on the ac, my rpm will drop and the car will shudder, and it goes back to making the rough sounding noise in drive while on the brake.

here are the repair instructions, if anyone wants to take a look. Im curious as to whether the vacuum leak would only be on a vacuum hose, or where the manifold meets the head. I dont think its where the manifold meets the head, because I would have issues in all other gears, right?

any vacuum issues would also show up in drive, too I’d have thought. I have had brakes that only squeaked in reverse, so give that a look!

If the issue was not present before doing the work, i would triple check you repair.

Did you try pulling on the engine bay wiring harness (wiggle test) to see if the problem will occur in park?

I also wonder about a vacuum leak mainly because you had the intake off. You might also do a power balance test to see if you have a problem cylinder somewhere.
