According to the 2008 Honda manual, after installing a new or used timing belt, you need to perform Crank Pattern Clear/Crank Pattern Learn tests for the PCM. I did the PCM Idle Learn test after disconnecting the battery, but never did the other “crank pattern” tests. So what’s up with these pattern tests? :whistle:

Personally I’ve never heard of or done this and up to this point I haven’t had any issues. That’s not to say that I’m right but as I stated I haven’t had any issues.
I imagine it is for the cylinder management for the 2009 and up pilots since the operate between 3 and 6 cylinders for gas economy
I did see a TSB on a 2003 that said if u do not use a Honda HDS to reset codes after a job, you choose to use after market scanner it will erase some learned memory and put false misfire codes in
I believe those are readiness codes. I checked the Engine Check light procedure in the service manual, chap. 11, to see if they where “complete” and they were. I do use an after market scanner too. The service manual tells you to reset all those parameters when using an after market scanner chap 11-4. I still have no idea what all these tests do.
Honestly how is the computer going to know you changed the belt? This is where my confusion comes in. Keep us posted on what you find during your experience.

Yes, I am confused too that Honda wants these tests done per their manual. Your absolutely correct in saying, ‘how does the PCM know you changed the belt?’ My guess they figure you might replace the PCM, for other reasons, or replace cam shafts or something like that. I have done the Idle Learn after removing the battery, which honestly I have no idea if that even did anything.
I’m VERY interested in the outcome on this one so please keep us posted. As for the idle relearn procedure I rarely find that to be something that has to be done. If there’s an idle problem sure, but for the most part they put things like that in the manual to cover the most remote possibility. Engineers like to cover their butts and sometimes take things to the extreme.
