Noticed at oil changes that the Pilot was consuming about half a qt. Use syn. oil 5w-20 with Fram Tough Guard oil filters at 5,000 mile intervals. No external leaks. Dealership said normal to have 1qt consumption in 1,000 miles. Is this really normal for Honda Pilot?

No. To be exact, the oil is sitting below the lower intake manifold or, another name, the front and rear injector base. Has anyone seen this situation on Pilots before?
No it’s not. When I had my 2004 Pilot, it never consumed any oil that was even measureable. Is it leaking or being burnt?
Yes it is actually. Honda has this on paper and from my experience if you burn a quart of oil between oil changes it’s considered normal. IF it exceeds 1 quart per 1000 it’s considered excessive.

Yes and it’s usually the result of someone spilling a little oil when filling the engine.
