Noticed at oil changes that the Pilot was consuming about half a qt. Use syn. oil 5w-20 with Fram Tough Guard oil filters at 5,000 mile intervals. No external leaks. Dealership said normal to have 1qt consumption in 1,000 miles. Is this really normal for Honda Pilot?

No it’s not. When I had my 2004 Pilot, it never consumed any oil that was even measureable. Is it leaking or being burnt?
November 9, 2012 at 12:24 am #475297Thats quite a bit of oil loss/consumption. not normal.

November 9, 2012 at 1:39 am #475317How many miles are on the engine? Have you noticed a funny smell from the exhaust, or maybe blue-ish smoke when you excelerate or idle? When you check the oil do you see any kind of foamey residue on the dip-stick?
November 9, 2012 at 4:00 am #47535684,000 miles. No smells or smoke from exhaust. No residue.
November 9, 2012 at 4:05 am #475358Contacted dealerships in my area, and no current TSB for Pilot along with the fact the consumption rate is within “industry standards” for now. However, there is a TSB for the Pilot dealing with this issue by updating software for VSM. If it gets worst, to bring it in for evaluation with possible help from Honda.
November 9, 2012 at 8:38 pm #475527Switch to regular oil. Synthetic oil has different flow characteristics and as a result an engine can burn more oil and have more external leaks than when you run conventional oil.
November 10, 2012 at 3:43 am #475684Well I’m changing the oil this weekend, so I will switch to conventional. What kind of oil filter do you recommend Eric?
November 12, 2012 at 1:46 am #476199Found oil sitting below intake manifold puddled at very bottom (can’t see oil in pic). Can’t see where it is coming from. Anyone seen this occur before?
Attachments:November 12, 2012 at 2:30 am #476227Did you see if your valve cover gaskets are leaking?
You could add some UV dye to your oil in aid to help locate the leak.
Keep us posted.

I am planning to remove manifold soon to look down there. So far I haven’t seen evidence that the valve covers are leaking.
November 12, 2012 at 2:54 am #476245+1 on uv dye. Hopefully your not consuming oil. As for oil filter. I like purolator and bosch personally.
