Friend has a 2008 passat. Exterior driver door handle stopped working. Replaced locking actuator and now the the door handle sorta works. You have to pull with one hand while pressing on the cover over the lock cylinder. Is there something that can be done to restore normal handle operation?

You will need to do a visual inspection of the handle linkage to check for binding/broken pieces.
Also check the door handle itself. You may need to lube the actuator pivot point.This is a common problem with much discussion on the VW-specific forums. Solutions vary, but the most common one seems to be that the cable stretches and/or shifts out of its properly seated position.
Well the latch itself is brand new. We can see the cable tugging on it but how do you determine proper tension vs faulty cable
