Before I start replacing components, what should I check first?

You could have a faulty coolant temp sensor.A stuck open
thermostat.problem with the wiring.Does the car run at normal
operating temp? Is your coolant full? Does the car have heat?
start at ec-668 for ECT sensorJanuary 20, 2013 at 8:02 am #493141college man, how do you know there is something wrong with the wiring? what about the possibility of the thermostat being stuck open due to a mechanical malfunction?
January 20, 2013 at 8:28 am #493149The car has heat so the thermostat is not stuck open, tomorrow morning I will check the wiring on the coolant temp sensor, as soon as I purchase some torx sockets!!

I believe my post mentions the issues that you addressed. As for the
wiring.I don’t know.but if the other stuff checks out.then I would have to
go there.Maybe critters on the wiring? :huh:January 20, 2013 at 7:09 pm #493202
The car has heat so the thermostat is not stuck open, tomorrow morning I will check the wiring on the coolant temp sensor, as soon as I purchase some torx sockets!!
these cars have a thermostat for the engine and a water control valve
for the heat.(Which is another thermostat)thats why you have heat. You say
you have heat.Is the top radiator hose hot? also compare it to the lower
radiator hose.is the lower hose cooler than the top? do you have a scanner
to read live data? it would help to be able to see coolant temp.January 26, 2013 at 1:44 am #494459In addition to what’s been mentioned this video is a good overview of things to check when you have or suspect you have cooling system issues.
January 26, 2013 at 8:00 am #494682Thanks for the info, I was unaware that the Nissan had two thermostats. The bottom hose was cold, so I replaced the thermostat on the block. Cleared the code. So far no more codes!
January 26, 2013 at 4:44 pm #494712Excellent. Lets hope we got it.keep us posted. 🙂
January 27, 2013 at 2:19 am #494860sorry college man, that’s what i get for reading too fast X – )
January 27, 2013 at 2:59 am #494864Happens to the best of us. 😉
January 31, 2013 at 1:25 am #495930FYI the bottom hose is suppose to be cold. The bottom radiator hose is the return after the coolant has been cooled so it should be cooler than the top hose.
March 3, 2013 at 5:58 am #504147Just to keep you guys informed, my Nissan has not screwed up yet. No codes, running fine.
March 3, 2013 at 6:00 am #504149After I replaced the thermostat on the block, the hose did get a little warmer, before it was ice cold. Which way does the coolant flow on that car, you would think that the hose coming from the block would be hotter!
March 3, 2013 at 4:18 pm #504238The top radiator hose is return.(hot) the supply is bottom
on the radiator.(cooler)March 13, 2013 at 1:20 am #506619+1 the lower hose is almost always the intake which draws cooled coolant from the radiator. The top hose carries the hot water from the engine.
