My girlfriend’s 08′ Eclipse is grinding when shifting into second gear and only second gear, even with the clutch pressed down it which confuses me the most. I am no expert with transmissions so the first thing I did was change the fluid since it could use some new fluid. Problem was still there so I asked a friend who is an expert in transmissions and he said it could be a syncro. Could it be a syncro? And how would you exactly replace it? Car is a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse, V6 3.8L with a 6-speed manual transmission, 45,650 miles. I’d appreciate any feedback. 🙂

Yeah it is most likely a synchro… Transmissions aren’t really a DIY-kinda thing unless you really know what you are doing because you pretty much have to take the whole thing apart to replace 1 tiny part…

Here are some images to show a little bit about a manual trans… I pulled these off of wikipedia:

        FIRST GEAR

        NUETRAL

        SECOND GEAR

Now see that blue think that entremeshes in 1st and 2nd gear? That is a syncro, it is intended to transfer power through itself to the gear you want to go into…

Now as you can see everything like a shish kabob and you’d have to take off anything in the way to get to it before you could replace it, this requires taking the transmission out, so you might as well get the clutch replaced while it is down…

So yeah… it isn’t hard, it’s just not an easy task…

I would have to agree with the second gear synchro being
the problem. The trans must come out.

I think I’m just going to try and replace it myself. I have removed a few transmissions before, even a few weeks ago I replaced the clutch on my Maxima with no problem. I have a question though where can I find just the second gear Synchro? The only way i can find them is through a full transmission rebuild kit but all I want is the Synchro so does anybody know where I can buy just the Synchro?

^ The only way I know of is to call your local mitsubishi dealer and see if they can sell you a single part, or to go and buy a used one from were someone re-built their tranny, and have a synchro that’s still good. (ie, they 1st and 2nd gear never had a problem but 3rd did or something)

For what it is worth-I experienced this condition with Acura RSX’s of the 2002-2004 range between 45K and 80K mileages. Acura dealer suggested a fluid change (which you did) using a BG brand product specially formulated for manual transmissions. It worked well for my customers and they only experienced difficulty on a 0-10 degree farenheit mornng until the trans oil warmed up a bit. Details below.

                BG Syncro Shift® II
BG Syncro Shift® II is a gear lubricant specially formulated for front wheel drive manual transmissions. It does not sacrifice any performance as does engine oil, ATF or conventional gear oil. It provides required thermal stability, low-temperature fluidity, hot rattle suppression, noise dampening at operating temperature, outstanding extreme pressure characteristics, shear stability, smoother shifting characteristics, wear reduction (synchronizer, gears, bearings, shift fork), seal compatibility, and reduced maintenance costs.

Yeah..BG products are good i use them all the time at work. Since you have the trans removed you might as well have it repaired. Better to pay for a syncro ring replacement now, than a syncro ring second gear and cluster gear later.

I already got the new Synchro for the transmission. Now I’ll get to work on removing the transmission. I’ll try the BG product if I ever have an issue like this again.
