This is my fianceé’s car and shes concerned about this noise. The car can be off keys out of ignition and I turn the steering wheel just a few degrees left or right and there’s a slight squeak. It’s not loud and not too soft either. Does the steering column/wheel need lube or something? The car has just over 60,000 miles on it and is automatic.

The first step is to identify the area the noise is coming from. is it heard near the top of the steering column ( area of the steering wheel ) or does it sound like it comes from the area closer to the floor. if near the top ( from behind the steering wheel ) there is a bearing at the top of the steering shaft. there might be an issue with the bearing. you will need to remove the steering wheel – USE CAUTION – If the car has a steering wheel airbag make sure to follow the factory procedure to disable it before attempting to remove the steering wheel. with the wheel removed you can try spraying some Teflon based spray on the bearing. be mindfull of any electrical components. if the noise goes away then the bearing is suspect. these are not serviceable and will need to be replaced. if the sound is closer to the floor inspect the u-joint were the steering shaft attaches to the steering rack. Sorry for the novel – hope you find this info helpful.

check where the steering shaft connects to the rack.
          possible upper strut bearings.
