For the past year, I’ve been hearing a whistle from the transmission of my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK. Typical of transmission behavior, the whistle can be heard when the Jeep is warm. When I shift from park to drive a “whoo-hoo-woo” can be heard. A single “woo” is heard coming to a stop. A long “wooooo” is heard with acceleration. The whistle is very audible, like as if it’s coming from a hole in the transmission and it reverberates off the pavement. The whistle also doesn’t affect the transmission’s shifting, yet it makes my Grand Cherokee sound like a circus wagon and most likely will lead to further problems down the road.

I took my Jeep to a transmission specialist where they said that it was the valve body. I took it back to the dealership and they said that it was the valve body. I had the valve body replaced and the whistle stopped only to come back a couple months later. More than likely whatever is causing the valve body to whistle is still prevalent.

I read that the whistle could come from low transmission fluid. However, on the 3.7L model there is no transmission dipstick and therefore no way to check the fluid level without taking the vehicle to a shop.

Would anyone know what is causing the whistle? I know that noises are difficult to diagnose from cars, but, as I described above the whistle is very clear from the transmission as if it is being projected from a hole. Is there a plug that could be missing? The whistle seems to come from a wafting or blowing of air from the valve body through a hole at the transmission, sounding just like those wooden toy train whistles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks.

Most noises like that are made by the pump, however I would listen to it with a mechanics stethoscope when it’s making the noise. Listen around the bell housing and the pan. If you hear it better around bell housing it would indicated bad pump or converter. If you hear it in the pan something with valve body or further in is faulty.
