I am new to this forum. I am also elderly and need a car that runs. My 2008 Hyundai Santa fe started having issues in Jan 2017. “No Start No Crank”. It would happen once a month or so and now it seems like it is once a day or every other day. I have 135,000 miles on it. I turn the key in park and absolutely nothing happens but the key turns. I wait a while and it starts right up. Last night after getting it out of the shop – still cant find the problem – it did it again. I put it in neutral and tried starting it and at first it didn’t start then after wiggling the gear shift it started. I had a new ignition switch put in at 128,612 miles which was Jan 2017. I am at a loss. I can’t afford a new car. Could it be the SMARTRA issue I saw a blog on here at your site. What should I do.

        Sounds like a bad starter.

That was never considered by anyone because there was no crank – no sound nothing – just turn the key and nothing. Then a few minutes or hours later starts right up with no delay.

If the ignition switch operates properly, it operates the starter relay, which is in the engine bay fuse box and makes a little click. If that operates properly, it activates the starter solenoid, which is part of the starter and makes a clunk. Then the starter motor engages.
With the help of an assistant, listen for the click from the engine bay fuse box when the problem is occurring. If the click happens and the solenoid and/or starter do not engage, you probably need a new starter. Once the starter is removed, an auto parts store can bench test it for you before selling you a replacement.
If the click does not happen, the starter relay, ignition switch, or wiring may have a problem.

Loose or corroded major electrical connections such as grounds or especially battery clamps are also common causes of no-cranks.

Finally, a battery on its way out can cause this symptom.

I went to car dealer last night. Service manager thinks it could be brake light switch. Makes no sense to me because it’s an automatic. I don’t need to put the foot on the brake to start the car. I put the foot on the brake to go from Park to neutral. They want to charge me $150 to change out the brake switch. Brake lights go on when I put foot on the brake I don’t get it

From what you’ve described, that does sound like nonsense.

I agree. the only thing I could think is that when I put car in park and put my foot on the break and turn it off maybe it isn’t setting something right so car wont restart in the right gear. Boy this is frustrating.

The brake light switch should be easy enough to do a bypass test on when this happens. Just jump the 2 terminals together and see if the issue goes away consistently. But that sounds very suspect to me, these kinds of issues take a diagnosis to determine what the issue is, not firing the parts cannon at it.

Your description of it starting after wiggling the gear shift has me wondering if there is something in the gear position indication that is going out. I’m not familiar with how Hyundai does it’s starting circuitry so I could be totally wrong.

I had a 2005 Cadillac SRX AWD over 200,000 miles and still own it, do that to me. Key in no crank. Just dead. It wouldn’t even release my key. Had power so that was good. Popped the fuse box and took 12/14 gauge wire connected it to purple start wire in fuse box and a bolt that was grounded. Had someone crank and started. Turned out some bad ground on fuse box.
