Hi Guys,
Got a 2008 Honda Civic with around 250,000km. I am getting a “woommm” / vibration noise when I put the car in reverse but once I release the brake the noise pretty much goes away.
I usually let the car warm up a bit but it still makes the noise. However, the noise is gone once a drive the car for a while.
I also flush the transmission with genuine Honda fluid once a year.
Any idea?

It sounds like the car might have an exhaust leak. You could take it to a muffler shop for an inspection.
It doesn’t seem like an exhaust leak. The whole car vibrates. and once the brake is release and moving backwards it is fine.
It could also be a worn engine mount or a combination of both mount and exhaust. I can’t hear the noise but the suggestions are a place to start.
Ya I was thinking that too. Or maybe when the car is cooler the idle creates a certain ton that causes it to vibrate. I will try to video record it tomorrow morning.

Here is the link. Hope the phone microphone was sensitive enough so you can hear it. Maybe you can hear it better with head phones.
Also note, I usually let it warm up more than this however wanted to make sure you can hear it.
As mentioned above, the engine becomes louder and the whole car starts to vibrate when going into reverse but once the brake is released the sound goes away. Also when the car is driven around a lot the noise is not there.
Any ideas?

Honestly I couldn’t hear much in the video. As for ‘flushing’ transmission fluid, that’s really not necessary on a vehicle that doesn’t have issues. A flush is something you do if there’s an issue you’re trying to correct. In some cases flushing a transmission like that can actually lead to problems. All that’s required is a drain and refill to keep things running smooth.
That said, if you have a CVT transmission that could be the problem. It doesn’t appear that you have any transmission codes as I do not see a CEL lit up on the dash. This might indicate a mechanical problem with the transmission. More info here.

oh ok. I driver back and forth to Lansing MI once a week. So rack up a lot of miles. Thought it was necessary.
But I will keep note of that.
Could it be fluid is not making it through some of the passages? Like Eric showed in his transmission tear down video? Because as mentioned above these issues do not exist once the fluid is very warm.
UPDATE: Looked into it a bit more and found out it is most likely a warn out engine mount. Here are the links and it is all the same issue as I have.

So I will take it to the mechanic and see if it solves the problem. I will update you guys when/if it is solved
