Hi, this is my daily driver with 185,000 miles with its first check engine light- P2413 (EGR issue). I have the tech service manual from Honda but without the HDS Honda scanner I cannot do 90% of the troubleshooting flowchart published.

My initial though is to try removing and cleaning. But I don’t know how to test this part other than reinstalling after cleaning then resetting the MIL.

There are no other issues that I know of with the car and it seems to run ok.

Any tips are appreciated. Will be working on it this weekend.

You need a graphing scantool or lab scope. When they fail the reading will tend to drop out or get stuck throught a certain percent of opening. With a tech level tool you can manually command the egr to open. What tends to happen is the computer says open say 80% so it’s looking for X voltage reading. When it doesn’t see the reading it should get the CEL comes on.

Typically there’s 3 wires, a power a ground and a signal wire. With the valve DISCONNECTED at idle you can manually apply power to open the valve, of course you also have to provide a ground. Assuming the EGR is functioning this should stall out the car. It wouldn’t hurt to take the EGR itself off and have a look at the passages and possibly give them a cleaning with throttle body cleaner.

But I digress, it’s a relatively expensive part to “throw” at a problem without accurately diagnosing it.

Thanks. I will let you know what happens this weekend. Lucky it looks like it’s very easy to access.

Today I used my elm327 obi/usb scanner and graphed a parameter called “EGR Error” and found it bouncing back and forth from 0% to 100% while idling.

Removed the erg valve- there are 5 connectors, 3 for variable resistor and 2 for coil power. All resistances checked ok.

So I cleaned the valve up with throttle cleaner although it didn’t look so bad, then I bench tested and applied power to the coil terminals. I heard clicking but did not see the pinion move at all.

I do have a lab scope as I work as an automotive sensor engineer by trade but I really didn’t want to put holes in wiring to back probe it if I really didn’t have to.

So am ready to condemn this EGR valve and plan to order one for $116 from an online Honda dealer.
