2008 Honda Accord Reuse Pistons

      Hello, I have a 2008 Honda Accord Coupe 2.4L Inline 4 EX PZEV model with an automatic transmission. The car has been burning oil since I bought it in Aug 2015. I’ve had to add oil every week, each time the oil level would be on the low dot of the dipstick. The car has about 93k miles on it now, and a P0420 code came up a couple of weeks back. I’ve recently torn down the engine with the intention of a light rebuild. After taking out the pistons I saw that all 4 pistons had seized oil control rings. I’d like to know if I can reuse the pistons after cleaning and giving it new rings. Here are some photos:

        Unless you are good with precision measuring instruments, I would take them to a machine shop to be checked. .. while they may very well be good, a professional can check them out and give you peace of mind… after all, you have gone that far. Also the machine shop may want to check the cylinders in the block as well. The skirt wear may cause them some concern…

        Also, may want to get a small drill bit and manually clean out the oil return holes in that ring groove.. Those clogging are a common cause of oil burning (especially certain Toyota engines… some have very bad oil burning issues because of this.)

        A machine shop may want to enlarge those holes as well… you can drill them yourself, but a machine shop will probably be more precise…

        Lastly unless you are having the cylinders machined, you want to mark each piston in some way to know which cylinder it came from and ensure you put it back in its proper one..

            At Honda whenever an oil ring campaign was completed, the old pistons went back in. In 2008 Honda went to zero tension piston rings that have proceeded to cause problems on everything they went in.

              That’s unfortunate, I assume it was a form of cost cutting or maybe experimentation? Do you happen to know if they changed out the rings after the oil consumption problems began? Like the part number for the current piston rings won’t coincide with the problem rings right?

                An update after the complete re installation of the K24Z3 engine.

                The Accord starts and idles fine in park an neutral. A couple codes popped up because I hadn’t connected the sensors tight enough, but since then no codes have appeared. A slight problem right now is that the car idles rough in the drive gears and the reverse gear (auto tranny). The tach however doesn’t fluctuate when in drive or reverse, there is just a noticeable vibration I plan to do another valve adjustment with hope to smooth out the idle, because its causing the internals and engine itself to vibrate quite a bit. For the most part the rebuild is over and now its time for diagnosis to see if any problems come up from the rebuild.

                The old pistons were used after washing and a measurements. The cylinders where honed to remove surface scruffs. Both the head and block were resurfaced to ensure a gasket would seat well. New seals were installed for the valves and were also machined&cleaned. More observation will be needed to see if the oil consumption issue is fixed.
