        Hi Secprotocol,

        Welcome to the forum.

Here is the TBS link (also comes with sound for the VTC rattle….very cool):
        http://mordor.rutgers.edu/accord/tsb/08-09%20engine%20noise%20on%20cold%20start%20L4%2009-010.pdf

Are you 100% positive that this “tinging” noise is not the “rattle” noise for the VTC in the TBS? If the vehicle is still under warranty, I would recommend having the dealership take a look. The dealership might go ahead and replace the VTC actuator. I assume this would all be covered under warranty. I would still ask ahead of time, just to be sure.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Like you said, take it in before your warranty is up. Leave the vehicle with the dealership and they should give you a loaner car. Take advantage of your warranty while you still have it.

BigC, the rattle and the tinging sound really different. The rattle is the rattle presented in the TSB, but the tinging sounds like forks hitting each other and goes away after a few seconds. I’ve tried researching this and people stated that it could be something loose or the timing chain tensioner not doing its job.

I try to stay away from the dealership ever since they scratched up my interior replacing the driver seat rails. Plus that’s the only Honda dealership in my town, which limits my choice.

But yeah, I’m probably going to bring it there in a few weeks or so…maybe i’ll try to record a video of it.

If the vehicle is still under warranty, i would definitely take it in as suggested above.

Apart from the possible noise coming from the VTEC solenoid, are you sure it is not valve train noise?

And also thanks BigC for that TSB link! C8-)

I would assume normal valve train noise is when the engine is fully warmed up and you can hear the nosy honda injectors…I mean it could be, I’m not a full expert in this. I just learn as I go. Would it be considered normal if it makes the sound at cold start only for a good few seconds and goes away?

Some GM’s suffer from noisy valve train issues until there warmed up.

I still would take it into the dealer if its under warranty.

Be careful with the K series engine as if you run them low on oil for long enough it will cause the timing change to wear and possibly cause a rattle. Also I would recommend switching back to regular oil to see if the noise goes away, that engine does not call for synthetic so you really don’t have to run that anyway.

                    Keep us posted.

                      Eric,

I check my oil once every few weeks and I have never been below the lowest hole. I’m pretty sure the engine hasn’t been running close to dry. Just to make sure, you’re talking about the tinging sound and not the VTC actuator rattle right? I started up my car today when it was about 25F and I didn’t hear the VTC rattle but the tinging after start up is still there. Also this sound was present when I was on regular oil so I thought I would try synthetic since it is easier to get the oil flowing in cold weather.
