I am doing a 75,000 mile service on a 2007 Volvo XC and all is good but the owner has been hearing a noise. its a kind of high whinning noise when you give it the gas at start BUT its not a loose fan belt noise. Also, it won;t make the noise at idle, sitting in the driveway in park or neutral, and just pushing the gas pedal. It doesn;t sound like a wheel bearing either. It stops as soon as you back off the gas?? I am kind of stuck on what else can cause it, I didn;t see any pulleys that looked off center and the belt looks good. Any suggestions???

Without hearing the noise it’s very difficult to say what’s causing the noise. The above link should give you some good ideas on where to start and the tools you’ll need to help you find the source of the noise. Keep us posted.

Some of those cars used a GM transmission that were known for the planetary gear sets failing. You might let a professional transmission tech take it for a drive just to rule it out.

Thanks for responding. I drove it again today. It is a whinning noise, almost like something may be spinning? I think maybe trans, I am not an expert there but i know it’s not a belt and all the pulleys are working properly and i can only get it to make the noise when i am driving it and pushing the gas pedal hard. Won;t do it sitting in the parking lot in park or neutral> I am going to check the link out you guys suggested and see what i can find! Again, thanks for the help!! ETCG< thanks for reading my post!!

Ok, after going through the videos on different noises, I told my customer to take it to Volvo dealer and have transmission checked, I had not heard that high of a whining sound and only while in gear. The next week, her check engine light came on and she took it and alot of oil residue had built up and the system had to be cleaned. I wrote the code down but i don;t have it with me right now, and it cost $500 to repair, at the Volvo place, BUT It was the Turbo making the noise. All this was done and oil changed, the guy at the Volvo place said this had happened over time and oil passageways had been blocked and that the turbo had been (oil starved) is how he put it. The turbo is still making a noise but it is a different noise now and not as bad? sounds more like a high wind blowing through a window that is only opened a tiny bit. Any other thoughts on this. I kind of wish the Volvo place had pursued the turbo noise more but they didn;t. Any thoughts on how to stop that noise? My customer had said she had to replace a turbo on a Volvo she had owned 15 years ago??? It was expensive!

Ok, could use a response or two. Car owner of the Volvo xc70 is pretty UPSET is a mild word. After she took the XC70 to the volvo shop and spent $900 on repairs which included cleaning all the oil passageways an oil change and numerous other things, due to the check engine light coming on, This past Monday am she called and said the car was making a bad noise and smoking like crazy. She pulled over and parked. I told her to wait and I would come by and check and see what was going on but she went ahead and drove the car home, noise and smoke and all. I got there and checked the oil first and NO oil in the car BUT I didn;t see any on the engine or spayed all around like and oil leak or none leaking underneath. She called the Volvo place that had done the work and he said the TURBO had suck all the oil out??? Ok fill me in on this one guys> I am not real experienced with a volvo Turbo. BUT just two weeks after he does all this work and said nothing else about the turbo noise, which I was trying to find out for her? this car goes down. NOW the volvo place wants $2400.00 to fix the turbo? Ok here goes my RARELY used politically correct term but “REALLY”?????? two weeks and no heads up about this and knowing exactly about what cause the oil to disappear? The owner is irate and throwing grenades in every direction she can? Just would like to hear some feedback on this.
                  Thanks
