      Good evening everyone!

Got a problem with the chevy again. Its a 2007 chevrolet silverado 1500 New body style (Still a die hard chevy man though. I’ve got an old 95 with over 220,000 on the odometer, so I know they are good trucks!)

My four wheel drive is not functioning. I had the truck up on all fours to verify that it was broken. Sure enough I turned the switch to 4HI and only the rear wheels turn. Changed the switch to 4LO. You could hear the transfer case/transmission changing to low gear, but still only the rear wheels turn. I crawled up under the truck while it was still in gear and in 4HI. The front driveshaft was turning just like the rear drive shaft was turning, however the front differential is not locking in.

Here is what I have done so far. I suspected the four wheel drive actuator from the start. I tested the electrical connector that plugs into the back of the actuator. It had plenty of voltage on it (between 12.5-13.5 volts). I then replaced the actuator. Tried the 4HI again, still the front differential will not lock in. I then removed the actuator and watched it as I turned the four wheel drive switch. It moved out as I switched for 4HI and back in when I switched to 2HI. I am at a loss now. I am really hoping this is a simple fix but my fear is there is a greater problem with the front differential. Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks!

On those model if you have any issue with the transfer case It should display a warning in your dash. being said the transfer case should be fine.

When all wheel are in the air. Put it in 4 hi or low. The front drive shaft should turn. If so Most likely you are good (the transfer case maybe worn (bearing or gear but lets not go there)

Now you want to look at the actuator on the front differential. You can remove it and have a friend to switch from 2H to 2Low and see if it move.. If it move. You can have a broken axle or worn spline and such in the front differential. If it doesn’t move you can use a screwdriver and go push where the solenoid would push to lock the axle to the diff… get a friend to turn 1 wheel and see if the drive shaft move. Hopefully that is the case. Now you would need to check for power and ground at the actuator to confirm movement before you put an actuator in

I’ve replace lots of actuator, I also got few broken axle. So It’s important not to throw part in as a diff rebuild is in the 1200 and a actuator is in the 150

From my research the transfer case control motor needs to be programed in order for the 4WD to work properly. You may need to take it to a dealer for them to program the unit to get the 4WD to engage.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
