I have a 2007 mazda 3 (2.0L) 94,000km. The window switch on the drivers side door only works intermittently. I often have to pull up on the switch 3-4 times get the window to go up. Two questions: 1) Can I just pop the window switch holder out of the door arm to take a look at it, or do I need to take the whole panel off? 2) Any idea what might be causing this? I’ve read on the interweb that mazdas get buildup in the window channel, but have no idea if that’s it or if it’s the motor or loose connection..etc.

If it were me I’d take the panel off. Sometimes in my experience the motor can get gunked up
causing it to work intermittently(usually you can hear the motor straining itself when
the switch is pressed). Can you hear the window motor when you press the switch even when the window doesn’t move? If this is the case I would suspect the motor or a restriction in the window channel as you have researched.
I would inspect the mechanical side of the circuit first before looking into the control side(the switch).
It could potentially be a loose connection inside the door as well as you suggest but the only way to find out is to start pulling the panels off.
Then I would look at the contacts in the switch being worn in that case. The driver side window is naturally used the most so it is only natural for the contacts in the switch to wear out faster which can cause an intermittently functioning switch before it goes completely out. If you have a multimeter you can test the resistance in the switch(ohms) and see if the contacts are wearing out.
So I took the door panel off and I’m looking at part number BN8F-66-350A which is the 4 switch module. I don’t have the right size torx driver (hate torx drivers!) to get it open and I’d like to see if any one the connections inside are bad. Does anyone know if I can just pop the top of the switches off? Or will that break them completely? It’s a 170 dollar part, so I don’t want to just give it a shot and see what happens.

Other question. Just out of curiosity can I swap the motors for the rear window with the front just to see if that fixes it. No one will ever sit in the back so if that does fix it then I’m golden.
