Diy’r here with 30 years of experience, mostly Honda. In a moment of brilliance while replacing the timing belt in my 07 odyssey, I started the engine with the crankshaft harmonic pulley removed. The key which aligns the timing belt sprocket with the crankshaft was in place, making me think this should be fine. After running for 10 seconds, the key popped out of the keyway, and the engine died with a few metallic pings.
What would you do to check the valves and pistons? I was thinking of backing off the valve lash and camshafts, aligning timing marks, then doing a leak down. But that might miss fractured valve stems and piston damage, which makes me consider a boroscope or removing the head.
Valve covers and timing belt are off now.
