      All,

I have been chasing a front end noise for some time now. I am a home mechanic, so most of the time when I do a repair it is a learning experience. My wife’s van has been making a noise that sounds like moan for short intervals. If I push down on the front end it may or may not make the sound and when driving the noise comes and goes, but when it does make the noise it is for a second or two. You can feel a bit of vibration on the floor when it makes the noise.

On the last oil change I noticed that there was movement when I grabbed the wheel and I saw it was moving on the lower ball joint. So last weekend I replaced the lower control arm with a Moog replacement and also did the wheel bearing as well. Put it all back together and noise is exactly the same, but the play is gone :cheer:

When it first started to make the noise a few months ago, I replaced the strut mounts on both sides with KYB mounts and struts have less than 50k miles on them. The van has around 150k on it now. Could the noise be the strut itself? Is there another component I should be looking into? It does not seem to change with the speed of the vehicle, but does not make the noise when not moving.

      Thanks

Seeing it does happen sometimes when you push down on the front end
It could be the upper strut pivot points. If you can get someone to push on
one side of the front end to rock it and get the noise to happen you might be
able to put your hand on the upper mounts to feel the noise.

Thanks, I will give it a try. You need to detach the plastic cover over the cover to get to the top of the mount, but that is fairly easy to pull up. Although, I would have thought, replacing the mount itself would have corrected a noise from there. I will try to record the noise and post it, but will first see if can feel that the noise is from the top.

Have you taken a look at your motor and transmission mounts? Hard to imaging one of them making a moaning sound, but I had rpelaced pretty much all of the mounts in our 05 Odyssey by 150k miles. Some had totally split (front was in two pieces!) and others were just badly torn (the side one was fun as that’s fluid filled and had drooled all over the side of the engine bay) – but if the groaning/moaning sound is just something moving when it shouldn’t, it could be a mount.

I replaced the upper side and front mounts within the last few years, but have not checked them lately. The rear and one at the transmission are the originals. It would be a good idea to check them.

                Thanks

I am convinced it is the strut itself. I pulled the cover up to get to the top of the strut nut and made sure they were tight on both sides. When I grab the passenger sided and move it up and down it makes the noise with almost no effort. Side to side does not make any noise. So, any travel on the strut it makes like a short grunt. No oil leaking from it. I will pull it and remove the mount and spring and see if it makes the noise just by compressing it.
