Hi everyone. I just hooked up to my brothers taurus and got a p0732. He states that when driving on the interstate after 2 hours, the car kinda shuts down and the transmission indicator light comes on. He will pull over and park it for a few minutes, then carry on. The car runs fine after that. Fluid level is good(naturally), and doesnt do anything like this at any other time. Not sure what transmission it has, just assume its got whatever tranny is the most common for the SE style. Has about 65k on it. Pretty sure its never been flushed or filter changed. Im leaning towards fluid and filter change, but what about shift solenoids? any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I remember a service bulletin on a P0732 on those cars…I can come up with now. Code is for second gear error and you stated: the car shuts down than sets for a few minutes and no problems after that. Maybe transmission filter is clogging up….maybe the fuel filter hasn’t been changed and it’s the issue…but the trans light is flashing….I guess remove the transmission pan and check.
I never did see very many of those Taurus’s in the shop under warranty; good dependable car that went for many miles….. Looks like college man has the best answer.

You can attempt a fluid and filter change but if that doesn’t work, my research indicates you may be looking at a failed transmission unfortunately.
Thanks to all who answered back. I think he is going to bring it to a shop. Like the link that CollegeMan sent, the trans. side pan has to come off no matter what to get to the shift solenoids anyway. I gonna go out on a limb and say its gonna get new fluid and a filter too. I will have to let you know later on how it goes. Thanks to Eric too, i agree that it may need an overhaul or seals/boots replaced in side it causing the problems. This is a great site. This isnt even my car and so many people want to help. Thanks to everyone who puts so much time and effort into everything on here.
