So my forester decided it didn’t want to have A/C as an option anymore it seems.

I think it is leaking from the evaporator, these cars seem to have this issue. I put in dye and it doesn’t show anywhere around the engine and A/C connectors.

So now I have to get to the evaporator behind the dash, so far I have pulled out the glove box and can see the blow motor assembly unit. It looks to be held on by 4 bolts. Once I remove those bolts, it looks like the whole thing will come out, and from my research, I should be able to get to the evap from here. Or do I have to pull apart the upper dash to get to it.

What I am looking for here are any tips on how to get to the evap and possibly remove it if my leak is from the evap.

I have watch all the videos on a/c recharge and I can handle that.

      thanks much for you help

Did you hook up the a/c gauges to see it the system in fact have a leak?

Did you put refrigerant in it? How many gauges did you use high or low side?

I put 2 cans of R134 with a low side gauge and it would just get to the point where it was full, but it was cold

by the next afternoon, it was dead again.

Once I started putting in refrigerant, the compress would start working and cycling on and off, so I know the compressor is good.

I put in red dye from a pressurized can and I can’t find any sign of it leaking, so that leads me to where I can’t see, behind the dash.

heh, I thought it would be nice and easy to pull this, figured it would be on the left side, nope.

Its behind the center of the dash.. Guess what I am doing next week (in my friend’s wedding this weekend), pull the dash apart, yayayaya….

                any tips on this?

                thanks again

It was the evaporator, I pulled it out and the backside of it was covered in oil…

the part is 300 from subaru or 70 from rock auto, as seeing the OEM has a habit of failing, this this case, I’ll roll the dice on aftermarket, and while I am at it, I am going to change out the expansion valve as it is on the side of the evaporator.

Once it is back together, my buddy that does HVAC will vaccum test it and charge it. Putting it back together is going to be fun!

I got the new a/c parts in the car, as it is my 2nd car this hasn’t been a top priority. After I got all the lines back together, I tried to do a vaccum test. I found that it was still leaking. I found the leak, it is a small double pipe that goes through the firewall and into the expansion valve.

The issue is this tube is 116 dollar from Subaru. Any ideas where to get quality used subaru parts?

                    thanks
