So I thought the noise would be fixed by replacing the belt. But, it did not. So, i was thinking next in line will be Idle pulley or tensioner pulley.

So, my question is, is it possible to replace the tensioner pulley only instead of the whole tensioner assembly? and how difficult is it compared to idle pulley?

Also, do you think this will fix the issue?

      Than you all.

When the cooling fan kicks on is when it chirps?

Yes exactly. that is the only situation when I hear the chirping noise

Wow thats weird since the cooling fan is electric and not run by a belt. If I were you I would go ahead and replace the tensioner assembly. Its not real expensive and its good practice to replace the tensioner when you put a new belt on it.

How does the belt feel? Grab a hold of the belt (engine off of course 😛 ) try to twist it side to side. It should only be able to twist 1/4 turn at the most

              Quoted From jkim972:

It’s just a chirping sound. it doesn’t sound like the full blown squeal. so when I see that the fan is kicking in is when I hear the chirp. it will immediately stop when the fan is off. maybe the increased speed when the fan is turned on is what’s making the belt slip.

Is changing the idler pulley even worth a try you think?

Check the compressor clutch. When it engages does the chirp start?

Maybe I should check the AC without the engine on and see what happens. Otherwise, how do I check the compressor clutch and how do I know when it engages?

Well if the engine isnt running you wont be able to check the clutch unless you jumper the relay or some other way of getting 12 volts to the clutch. Even so, it wont tell you much cuz the engine wont be running. Also, if you look at the front of the ac compressor by the belt when someone turns the ac on you will hear it click and you will see the clutch engage/disengage

well unless its a VDOT air conditioning system, in which case once you turn the ac on the clutch wont cycle on and off

I don’t think you could replace just the pulley you will probably have to replace the entire assembly. This video might help you with this problem.

Does it make any noise with the ac off? If it only makes noise with the ac on then it could be a compressor clutch or compressor making a little noise. If it always makes the noise then the tensioner assembly should be replaced. Also, check to make sure the pulleys are aligned and there isnt any looseness or wobble

It only makes noise when the AC is on. But, once the car gets warmed up the noise will stop, even when I am idleling. Would this still be the compressor?

Ya know its possible but not as likely because in my experience the sound is usually constant with the ac on and doesnt go away. Is it just a little chirp sound or a full blown squeal?

The compressor does have a bearing in it.

You are welcome. If it were me I would just let it go and if it starts making more noise then I would either replace the compressor or just done run the AC

I looked at it again and It looks like the AC compressor issue. It was the only pulley that wasn’t spinning with the AC off which I assume it’s the clutch. But, when I turned the AC on it was spinning with some hesitation. It was spinning more freely as the engine got hot and the squealing chirp stops when it reached the normal operating temperature.

My next question is… how hard is it to replace to compressor by myself in my garage?
