Yes, new gear oil would be a good idea.
This is front wheel drive right?
If so then look into the shift linkage system, something could be binding up.If this uses a cable the cable could be rusty.
If it’s mechanical oil up the joints and see if that helps.I’m not familiar with the Vue, but many standards have bushings in the linkage and/or in the shifter itself. Over time they can wear and cause problems.
Changing the tranmission fluid is a good place to start. I believe it uses a Dexron III ATF. The Dexron III spec is an old spec so just look for bottles that say “Dexron” on it. Don’t put in Dexron VI.
I’m with the group on this one as I would start by changing the fluid, not sure what type it takes but look in the service manual to make sure you put the right stuff in. It’s also a good idea to check the linkage for any binding or damage but if you don’t find any I would recommend changing the fluid with the correct type.
Changed the fluid out yesterday and have driven it about 80km since then….shifter seems a little better but i know it isn’t quite right.
when checking the linkage for binding is this done from inside the car…lifting out the console surrounding the shifter?No, I would actually start at the trans to see if there are any broken bushings or anything that can cause an issue with the linkage not lining up correctly. You might even consider disconnecting the linkage from the trans and working the shifter to see how well it moves without being hooked up, if it’s still stiff then the problem is most likely in the linkage and not the trans.
