I bought this van on Friday with 45,000 miles on it. Before taking it on a road trip on Sunday, I noticed that the coolant reservoir was at the min mark, so I topped off the radiator and reservoir with distilled water. It took about half a gallon of water. It did fine on the road trip, temperature was good, everything worked perfectly. Now its Monday, I started the van this morning and the “D” light began flashing. Everything still worked perfectly and the tranny shifted fine.

      Whats up with the light?

      Thanks,
      Joey

Here’s a video of it in action, it happens intermittently and completely randomly:

You should be able to get a code with a scan tool even of you don’t have a check engine light on. This will help you pin point the cause. My sister-in-law has a 2002 CR-V with an intermittent flashing D and I was able to extract code P0845 even though there was no flashing D at the time I scanned it. Her issue turned out to be a faulty ATF oil pressure switch which was an easy fix. If you don’t have a scan tool a place like Autozone will scan it for free.

When you get the flashing D light. The transmission is
            having a problem.

+1 a flashing D light means that the TCM has detected a problem with the transmission or one of it’s sensors. You’ll need to have the code pulled to find out what system is effected.

2 things I mention with any Honda transmission issue. The first is to make sure you only use Honda auto trans fluid. The second is that you don’t check the fluid level while the engine is running. You need to check fluid level with the engine OFF and preferably warmed up.
