Hi guys, hope you’re all well.

My mum has a Ford Fusion UK version as below….

It has an intermittent problem whereby you’ll turn the key and sometimes it starts straight away and other times it will crank for up to 10 seconds before starting up. It does this at random times and makes no difference if it’s recently been run or started up from cold in the morning; it can happen any time. It’s always started but is annoying.

I have checked the battery with a DVOM and it’s got a good voltage of 12.64v. However, should I take it to my local parts store to have them check the CCA?

if the battery’s good I’m thinking I need to get the fuel pressure checked.

Would you agree with the above steps?

I don’t see the point checking fuses and relays to the pump, injectors etc because as I mentioned it starts and runs fine.

Any help you could give me would be great ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers.

A fuel pump has a check valve that keeps the fuel in the system from draining back into the tank. To help determine this check valve problem you can turn the key to the on position without starting and back off again a few times. This will prime the fuel system so you can start the car. This intern would take away the long crank time.

Thanks for your reply mate ๐Ÿ™‚

As the problem is intermittent I shall do that each time; if the problem goes away then I can assume the check valve needs replacing?

I trust this check valve would have no bearing on fuel delivery or fuel volume whilst the car’s running?

Could I hook a fuel pressure gauge up when the car’s off and i’ll get a reading? or does the pressure go away after switch off?

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

There would not be any problem with volume or delivery.
Your car should hold pressure for a little while after the car is off. With a pressure gauge hooked up you would see the pressure bleed off immediately if there was a problem. It may drop a little once the car is shut off but should not bleed down fast.

Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

Does it make a diference that mum’s car has an electric fuel pump?

Is there anything else that it could be? The check valve sounds pretty convincing. i’m still going to get a full battery test done including CCA check but if that comes back ok i’ll prob be looking to swap out the fuel pump (presuming I cant just replace the valve?)

Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

++++1 on cycling the key on and off before trying to start.
Do you have a check engine light on? The best thing to do is
test fuel pressure with a gauge. You could try spraying starter
fluid in the intake to see if it will start. If it does then fuel
issue.

Thanks for the reply CM.

No check engine light and no other problems; in fact it runs great. We’re cycling the key every time and going to test it over a month or so and see if it returns. if I can get hold of a pressure gauge in the mean time (funds bit tight at the moment) then i’ll do the pressure tests.
