2006 ford f150 crew cab XLT
      5.4L with 217,000 miles
new alternator, serpentine belt(X2), new water pump, new belt tensioner, new idler pulleys(X3)

I have a problem with my Ford… Engine squeals just like it has a bad tensioner or belt or idler pulley. Engine makes same noise with serpentine belt off the truck and running. It does it in any gear and in park, hot or cold(i live in Mississippi so cold is a relative term). I have watched and listened to tons of youtube videos and nothing seems to even come close to noise i have. It sounds just like belt squeal. Used a stethascope and can only narrow it down to middle of valve cover area. I am going to try replacing the cam followers this weekend to see if that will help. Any ideas to check while I’m in there or am I barking up the wrong tree? added video per request

Did it make the noise before you worked on it??

From your description, it sounds like maybe an oil passage to a cam bearing got blocked and you’re hearing the death throes of that head. Have you checked the oil for glitter?

Despite the similarity to known sounds, a video might help.

Oh yeah dude, that is steel on steel. Bad news. Pull the valve cover and witness the carnage.

well, nothing obvious under the valve cover, must be a cam journal. I’ll pull them off tomorrow night and see what I can find. Thanks for all your ideas guys!

Sent you a PM on this. My son’s F-150 has this exact same noise. This is the first and only vid on the inter webs that has that same noise. I’ve also pulled the valve covers and the left (driver) side cam chain is loose and it looks like the chain is rubbing on the front cover near the top. Once I get the front cover off I think I’ll find more scraped spots.

Mine appears to be the cam journals. we are pulling the head off this week to get it rebuilt. I had replaced everything else that could squeal, when we put head back in we will be doing a complete timing chain and phaser replacement. Yours could very easily be timing chain tensioner(s) or guides, I’m just replacing it all. tired of the noise.

Those timing chains aren’t all that simple to replace and those heads are near impossible to remove with the engine installed and the cab attached.

If you’re going to be spending that much time and money on it, you should really think about just getting a rebuilt engine. By the time you do the heads and put everything back together you might be at that price already. I really think you should sit down and crunch some numbers on it.

thank you for your concern, I have already crunched the numbers and rebuilt and replacement engines are way out of my price range. I am a disabled vet on a fixed income and have to spend as little as possible to get this truck going. Everywhere i priced he was in the 3500 to 4500 for rebuilt and used was around 2100 to 5000…go figure. And this way I can do the work myself(with sons help) for about 1200

Cool, just making sure you make the best decision for you. Considering the issues with cam journals those engines have it isn’t worth chancing it with a used engine. I was working in a shop and we bought an F150 with the phaser knock and by the time we priced out getting the heads redone, etc, etc, it was almost the same as a rebuilt engine in our market.

Do some research on the timing chain, I’ve never handled one myself but I took a training course based on that engine and the instructor was talking about needing at least 1 special tool to block the chain where it passes through the head, but you can make your own with a piece of wood, or something to that effect. Just something to look into before you start ripping into things.

Afterwards, do yourself a favour and run only synthetic oil. The cam journals wear out and oblong leading to fluctuating oil pressure which usually leads to phaser knock, but has apparently gotten past that in your case and actual mechanical damage is occurring. If the heads are being rebuilt, set aside some money in case you need to replace a cam or other part. If you’re buying them already remanned, that isn’t an issue.

Updating with my current battle with this same squeal. This is a video of my cam and cap inspection. The video starts with the right (passenger side) cam from back to front, then the caps on that side in reverse order then on to the left side cam and caps. I can catch a fingernail in the grooves in a few of the journals on the right cam but not at all on the left cam. I’m assuming I had a loss of oil pressure that caused this to happen quickly. Could be VCT solenoids, oil passages to the heads or the oil pump . . . or a combination of those. It looks like I need new heads/cams. Anyone know of a good source in the DFW area?

Also, the left chain was loose and just started scraping the front cover. The tensioners were pumped up so I think the chain just stretched. Hmmm?

Well two new heads and new timing gear and the truck is running better than new.
