Family member has a 06 equinox, EVERYTIME he hits the brakes sounds like the ABS kicks in. He talked to the guy he bought it from, he said it sounds like wheel bearing. I told him he’s an idiot. I’ve tried to have him bleed his brakes, but he don’t want to take time to do it. I told him it’s the easiest and cheapest way to start trying to find out what is going on. And just so happens the guy he bought the car from just put calipers and pads on it. He is a supposed mechanic, West Virginia back yard maybe. Thought on the noise?

It could be air in the abs? Does the brake pedal feel good or are the
brakes spongy? see if this helps.

It could possibly be the hubs / ABS sensors since they are a semi sealed unit, meaning GM hubs usually come with ABS sensors installed. It’s actually a fairly common issue on the 1/2 ton trucks, and probably the rest of them too. A bit of rust or corrosion will build up where the sensor mates to the hub causing the sensor to move just far enough that it will momentarily lose signal and think the wheel has locked up. But not enough for the ABS system to go WTF and set a code.

You can try pulling the sensor out and cleaning the mating surface of rust but BE WARNED, if there is excess rust in the passage the sensor itself lives in it may be stuck in requiring forceful removal if it doesn’t just brake off. In this case you will need to replace the sensor, Basically if you plan on touching the sensor on either side be prepared to replace it.

Maybe not an Idiot. The ABS sensor is built into the wheel bearing. I f the ABS controller senses wrong info from a sensor it could cause the ABS to activate during a stop.
