      Hi All,

I bought a used 2006 Corolla LE with 41000 miles last summer. I replaced the front brakes and drive belt on May. I found there is chirping noise like “chir chir chir…….” under hood (not sure) when you apply brake for a red light or stop sign but it is gone right away when you release the brake (July in OH). Also, the noise is gone when you change shift ‘D'” to any other position when braking. This only happens when the car gets totally warm up or in warm or hot weather. It also happened this summer and recently. Also, I was not aware of this noise when I bought the car.
Here is the noise video on youtube:

I am not sure it is due to the new drive belt or new brakes? or something like pulley, belt tensioner? It is intermittent but a little bit annoying. I would like to fix it if just spend small money.

      Any thoughts? Thanks.

If the noise is present when not moving, then it’s not the brakes. Harbor freight sells automotive stethoscopes for less than $10. You can use the tube from an empty roll of paper towels in a pinch. Put your ear on the one end, and move the other end from one pulley wheel to the next, until you locate the sound. It’s likely a pulley wheel for the tensioner or idler pulley, or the alternator. Could be part of the timing belt system too, that has its own tensioner and pulley wheels. If it has a chain instead of a belt, then scratch that last tip.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I will test it with spray bottle water to see if it is from tensioner pulley or idler pulley wheel. If that is the case, I may need to have my mechanic fix it.

I will post here if there is anything new.

Do you feel any pulsating while braking?

No. Another thing is you can hear a very short and sharp whistle sound when you release the brake quickly.

              Thanks.
