My friend has a 2005 Volvo xc90 2.5t. Yesterday he attempted to clean his Electronic Throttle Module and now the engine is misfiring, backfiring and then stalls. The check engine light flashes when first starting the vehicle. I connected my diagnostics scan tool but, it said “no codes”. I assume only Volvo will be able to diagnose the issue at this point. The whole purpose of him cleaning the ETM was because it was surging at idle with the AC running. I am pretty good with cars and I stopped over to look at it and cannot see any issues. The ETM is buzzing when the key is in the ON position but when you press the gas pedal it stops bussing and you can hear the throttle plate opening and closing. It seems to be a multiple cylinder misfire. We disconnected the battery and then after reconnecting the battery put the key in the on position for 15 minutes because we read it would help with the calibration or relearn of the throttle. My buddy did admit to moving the throttle plate when cleaning it, but there are videos online of other people moving it while cleaning it and didn’t have any of these issues after. I personally think it’s a bat Electronic Throttle Module now since that is the only think that was tampered with. I also checked all the connections and vacuum lines and didn’t see any issues. I wish I had an expensive diag tool to read Volvo codes.

If the engine light is flashing your misfiring. Check your
ignition components. Try doing a power balance test.

I wanted to update everyone that the Volvo is fixed. My buddy took the Electronic Throttle Module/Throttle Body and replaced the gasket instead of reusing it like he had. Also left the pos and neg battery connections off over night with the neg and pos wires touching. (read on a Volvo forum this help drain the ECU). Also removed the the ETM and ECU fuse over night. The next morning put everything back together and the cars is running line a charm. Not too sure if it was the draining the computers or replacing the gasket on the ETU but, I personally don’t feel it was the gasket. Hope this helps someone!

Glad you worked it out. Sounds like it was a vacuum leak.
But as long as the issue is resolved its a win. 🙂
