My buddy has a 2005 Volvo XC90 with the T-5 AWD. The front, driver side CV Axle half shaft broke off at the spines leaving part of the shaft stuck inside the transmission? Any suggestions how to get it out? I tried removing the passenger side front CV Axle and taking a long rod and passed it through the transmission to knock out the broken piece of the axle out but, it is really stuck in there. There is absolutely nothing to grab onto to pull it out. It is broken off way inside the transmission right where the splines begin. I have never seen anything like this before. I’m running out of ideas and fear the transmission will need take completely apart to get to it. Thanks in advance.

Can you weld a bolt to it so you have something to pull on?

I ran into this issue a few years back, same model. The car had been driven with mismatch/worn tires for some time and the resistance that caused on the driveline found the weak link. We had to replace carrier assembly as it had worn where the spider gears run. Hope this isn’t your issue, good luck. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks very much for your input transman304.

I was wondering if it might come to that. I was thinking that even if you were able to get the axle out, would the carrier still be viable. Sounds like it might not be. Meaning the transmission may very well have to come out anyway. You might just be wasting your time trying to get the old axle out.

Please keep us updated on your progress.
