      2005 Volvo XC90 2.5t 5 Cylinder – Turbo Automatic.

My buddy has a Volvo XC90 with the 2.5 turbo 5 Cylinder and it has been consuming oil rapidly. He just changed the oil and put in 10W-40 Mobil-one Synthetic because he read the 10W-40 weight may slow the oil consumption down instead of the 5W-30 and also installed a new oil cap o-ring. The Volvo drops about 1/4 quart every 400 miles. The vehicle has about 125,000 miles on it currently. He has owned it since 89,000 miles and has always burned oil but, has gotten worse.

When you take the plastic covers off of the top of the engine that covers the coil packs and plugs there are always small puddles of oil in the crevices and in in the one spark plug well. The oil doesn’t appear to be leaking out anywhere besides there and doesn’t run down the sides of the engine. He took the bottom skid plate off to see if it leaves any spots on the ground and it doesn’t. The exhaust is clear and doesn’t looks like any oil is being burned out the exhaust. If you run your finger inside the tail pipe there is an excessive amount of black carbon buildup you will get on your finger. Sometimes you can smell the oil burning too after it warms up from inside the vehicle. I also notice something greasy on the inner cooler tube that crosses over in front of the serpentine belt on the bend where it goes out to the front of the vehicle. Inside the inner cooler tubes are greasy too like there is oil in them. I don’t understand why so much oil is being lost? When we did the plugs about a year ago the old ones looked average when removing them. No excessive buildup of any kind. Is it possibly a bad turbo?

You have a few items you can check. Kinda looks like most of the oil is being burned so number one on my list and the easiest to fix are valve stem seals. Can be replaced without pulling the head. Second would be rings. You might get some idea with a compression test. Third would be oil leaking into the turbo but I am not sure how the Volvo is plumed. My 99 Saturn uses about a quart per tank of gas, oil is cheap.

You need to check and or service e the box system. There are videos on YouTube to show you how. Take a rubber glove start and warm the engine. Take the oil cap off and place the glove over the top of the oil filler opening like a balloon. If the glove blows up the box system will have to be serviced. This involves removing the fuel rail and injectors and several other things to replace the box system. The positive crankcase system.
