My friends mom has a 2005 Suzuki Verona S 2.5 with about 72000 miles on it. The recently has began having several issues. First from what I see is a bad motor mount, when backing up makes a vibrating noise and shutters. Did the old brake pressed on the floor and rev in gear test. The engine moves a large amount forward and back. The problem seems solved, however the next has me floating around on diagnoses.

His mom said as of recently the car has had a loss in power, doesnt seem to want to climb large inclines and has to turn off the A/C. Also randomly surges at a stop and trys to jerk forward. I didnt drive the car but went for a short ride in the car with my friend. I felt the surge and feels similar to something I have felt with a bad MAF sensor. Now I should continue with her telling me at times it feels like it goes to neutral when driving, I did not feel this to interpret it but with a sealed transmission its hard to tell whats going on in with it. Under my inspections when the gas is pressed you hear a gasp for air noise like some kind of a leak. I searched around and did not see any leaks that I could find. Also when checking the motor mounts the engine would cut out like it was hitting a rev limiter but was in gear at about 1800 rpm. I open oil cap and found large amount of oil deposit build ups that are rock hard, not sure what would cause that.

Being a GM guy I am not very versed in these cars and dont really know any common issues to look for. Anyone have any suggestions?

First of all that car is a GM/Daewoo which, unlike its Suzuki Forenza sibling, is a rebadge of a model not otherwise sold in the US and has a engine that never went in a Daewoo here. Moving on, that car still being alive at this point is unusual, as it is one of the most problematic cars I’ve seen in 15 years of dealing with cars. I was at Suzuki dealing with them from 2007-2010. Engine problems are difficult to diagnose, usually very expensive to deal with, and there’s never just one at a time. Plastic engine parts break very easily and parts in general are getting difficult being that Suzuki dealers don’t exist anymore and the aftermarket support is weak.

I hate to just be negative and not really address your problem, but the truth is that the car is a high risk of needing repairs far beyond anything reasonable whether or not that time happens to be now. It’s likely that it will come sooner rather than later. I only ever saw a couple pass 100k, and I’ve seen more than one customer in tears because they were out of warranty and needed a repair more expensive than what they owed on the car. Hopefully the car is paid off at this point.

As far as your problems, I can tell you that the engine produces lots of sludge when normal reasonable oil maintenance is done on it. they eventually produce enough to start having lubrication problems that start with the rocker shafts in the cylinder head getting noisy. Your gasping noise may have to do with something broken on the intake manifold. Every vacuum nipple is EXTREMELY frail and delicate, as are the radiator nipples, be very careful of every piece of plastic sticking out.
