I’m trying to fix the heat problems my mother’s van is having. Her 2 complaints are that there isn’t very good airflow when the heat is on, which was fixed when I changed her cabin air filter. The other is that the fan doesn’t work on all speeds.

      It’s a 2005 Pontiac Montana with 180k miles.

The knob that controls the fan speed works on settings 1 through 4 without any issue. But on setting 5, the blower motor shuts off. If you turn it back to any other setting, it starts blowing again.

I’m not sure where to begin trying to diagnose the problem. I’m sure it’s electrical, but I don’t know where I should begin looking for the problem, or even what I’m looking for. I’d like to have an idea of where to go before I start pulling apart the console.

If you guys could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it!

Could be the control panel or, more likely, the blower resistor. The circuit diagram should give you the details on the inputs to the blower resistor. You can back-probe those, and if the input in setting 5 is correct, and there is no output, the resistor is bad. If the input is not present, the control panel or the wiring between the control panel and the resistor is bad.
