      Hello, people,

Background: I drive a 2005 Mazda Tribute(4wd). I bought this car about one and half years ago with about 61,000 miles on her. Now, she has 75,000 miles. I have been changing oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles since then.

Problems: About 6 months ago, I found out that she has some hesitation when I drove on the same highway ( which means I drove her on the same highway before with no problem). Because there is a part of the highway with 7 grade uphill (about 2 miles). The speed limit is 60 mph. However, she could only go about 40 mph no matter how hard I pushed the gas.

What I have done since then:1: Put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. 2: Change the oil with a new oil filter. 3: change the transmission fluid with a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix.

Aftermath: Nothing special changed. She still cannot pass 40 mph on the uphill highway.

What I am going to do1:change the tires since they all worn out anyway. 2: change the spark plug.3: clean the Throttle. 4: change the fuel filter.

Of course, the reason I am here is to open to all comments, advice, and anything. If the same situation ever happened to you or you ever met before, please do not hesitate to share. I am more than happy to learn from you.

      Thank you

      Shen

ps. thanks Eric for all the videos.

does the vehicle have acceleration problems only
on hills or all the time? does the engine rev but
goes nowhere? if you manually downshift while going
does the vehicle speed up?here are some videos to help
you get started.after you try some of these methods.you
could remove the o2 sensors and take it for a ride and see
if the power is restored or better.

          Thank you for the message.

The vehicle only has acceleration problem on hills.

It is a automatic vehicle. When I try to drive faster on hills, the tachometer goes up all the way to 4,000-5,000 rpm, however, the vehicle does not speed up at all. It stays at the same speed.

one thing I think I should mention. Before I did the transmission fluid change and Lucas fix, the vehicle also had another issue— it was fine to start the engine and drive for a little bit, then it suddenly stopped and the tachometer went back to zero with the engine still on. no matter how hard I pushed the gas, the car wouldn’t move and either did the tachometer. Fortunately,it hasn’t happened again since I changed the Transmission fluid. :side:

if the rpm shoot up but the but the vehicle does not
go any faster then You have a transmission problem.

Try downshifting it, if it won’t kick down on it’s own. Will it kick down at WOT on flat ground?

I’m wondering if you might have a transmission problem based on your description. You didn’t mention if you have any check engine lights on or anything like that. If you do I would start there to see what the codes say.

                  Hello,guys!

Thank you for all the help.

Finally, I changed the spark plugs today. Guess what I found.

All the old spark plugs were all wore out. So I put in 4 new ones with anti-seize on them.

However, a new problem showed up: there are oil on two of the spark plugs and their spark wire. So I am going to get a valve cover gasket now and see what happens.

ps. Eric, there is no engine lights on so far.

                    Thanks for the update.

Let us know how the valve cover gasket replacement goes.

Also check the pcv valve on that..If valve cover gasket doesn’t fix the leak, the spark plug well gaskets are the culprit most likely..

                        Okay, people,

Finally, I got it done. Here are some tips: for this particular engine cover, you will need both 10 mm and 8 mm sockets to get all bolts/nuts out. I don’t know why they have two different size of bolts on one engine cover.

Alert: Because I don’t have a torque wrench,so when I put all those bolts/nuts back in, I used my “experiences” to screw them in. And one of them got broke! Half of the broken part is still in there. For now, everything looks good. No oil leak. no nothing. However, it will be pain in the butt to get the broken part out when I do any service next time.

                        So USE A TORQUE WRENCH!

                        Shen

That’s terrible. Sounds like you’ll need to get a bit extractor to get it out. They work pretty good too by the way. Thanks for the update.

Unfortunately broken bolts are not uncommon on Mazdas so don’t beat yourself up too much. That said thanks for the update and for using the ETCG forum.
