Last week I started having problems with my 05 Accent, hatchback, 1.6L engine, automatic transmission. Filled the tank up with gas and the car stalled pulling out of the station and wouldn’t start unless I pumped the gas while cranking the engine. Ran and started fine after that and I thought it may have just been an air bubble in the fuel line, since there wasn’t a check engine light or any other symptoms after that. Fast forward to this morning and the check engine light comes on during my commute and when I checked it, it gave an EVAP code (P0441). I also stopped to refill the gas and it stalled again as I was leaving the station. Also after I measured the gas mileage I found that I’d lost around 7 mpg (from around 30 to around 23).

I’ve never heard of EVAP problems causing stalling and loss of gas mileage but I’m not all that familiar with these systems so I don’t really know. I’m going to test if it’s the gas cap going bad since on the list of things that could cause a P0441 that seems to be the easiest place to start, but other than that can anyone point me in the right direction on where to start looking? I’m not all that thrilled about digging around my car’s fuel system blindly…

      Thanks 🙂

Being that this occurred after filling up..
Did you top off your tank?
        If so:
Trouble code P0441 may be triggered by the purge valve being defective, the ECU not operating properly, and/or the EVAP canister which holds fuel vapors being saturated with raw fuel.

The EVAP canister should be checked to see if it contains raw gas. The canister should also be checked for leaks.

No, I never top off the tank. I’ve heard some other people I’ve this about and most have said that it’s the purge valve, seems to be a common problem for Hyundai’s I guess. I’ll check the EVAP canister too though. I don’t want to just start replacing things unless I’m sure it needs to be replaced. I’ve made that mistake before and it got expensive…

I couldn’t open the EVAP canister, but I pulled it out of the car and no fuel came out of any of the hoses. I also checked the purge valve. It was closed when I pulled it off the car and when I hooked up a battery it clicked but otherwise did nothing. My theory (please correct me if I’m wrong here) is that the purge valve being stuck closed is causing the computer to richen the fuel mixture since the extra vapors aren’t getting into the engine and the car is stalling at the gas station because the EVAP system is already backed up from the fuel vapors not having anywhere to go and flood the engine when new gas is put in.

I can not comment on if your theory is correct.
But if you have confirmed a faulty purge valve, that would be a good start.

When you refill, if the purge valve sticks open, the fumes go to the intake manifold causing it hard to start.

A quick update on this since the replacement purge valve has not arrived. Filled up the gas today and again, it was hard to start. That part seems to be getting worse the longer this goes on. But strangely when I checked the millage we were getting 35 mpg. It’s actually the best mpg we’ve ever gotten out of that car. Any ideas about that?
