I was just doing the rear brakes on my girlfriends 2005 ford focus where the bearings are mounted in the drum brake. I took off the 30mm bolt and did the brakes. Upon re installing I torqued both bearings to 170 ft lbs. I read online the specs are supposed to be 173 ft lbs. I think that’s a lot of torque for a bearing but that’s what i have been finding online everywhere.

One of the bearings a month later which is now! started to make a droaning noise!
Now i am puzzled! Did i muck something up? is the torque right? I might of gotten some water in to the bearing when washing the drum brake as one of the cylinders was leaking hence why i had to fix the brakes in the first place.

Does the bearing need to be pressed out? or will the removal of the snap ring allow it to come out? any specific procedure when installing the hub that i may have missed?

I guess now i will have to change that bearing since its making noise? no play in it though just droning noise. and i didn’t use any power tools for the job either just hand tools.

Any Ideas or theories why its like that would be appreciated

If those are the drum setups where the bearings are housed in the drum themselves, you may need another hub/drum.

        That torque spec sounds correct.

Also when it comes to automotive parts, you get what you pay for.

the bearing that failed was an original Ford Bearing and the car has 60k on it! 2005 ford focus

I did replace the drum/bearing asembly today. I also got a new bolt for the hub which cost me 25$ at the dealer total ripoff for a few grams of metal.

I torqued it down to 173ft-lbs and its good now. no more sound.

The issue I had was I was doing a brake job and upon re installing the hub the bearing started making noise. I did re use the old bearing nut and torqued down to 170ft-lbs apparently the bolt is good to one time or 4 times something like that.

Anyways I found this very helpful for those guys out there doing the brakes and messing around with the hub nut and all that there is an easier way to get to the brakes without taking the central bearing nut off

check out these links the 4 bolts on the backing plate can be removed allowing the removal of the drum and hub together!

trust me saves time and money! if u mess up that bearing re tightening it or even the 25$ nut that you have to replace every time makes a lot of sense!

Wish I knew this before I undid that central nut!
