My ford 500 is fwd. I checked the fluid level and it was about a quart low. I also checked the cv axles and mad sure that the torque converter is rotating. All seems fine. The problem is I am not getting any output at the axles. When i put in drive, revers, or any gear it seems to start to pull until it has any type of load. Then the transmission slips into a freewill and the only way to stop it is to put into park position or neatural position. Any idea what might cause this to happen. Wanting to eleminate anything that could be wrong or any thing that may fix it. I do not want to remove transmission if i do not have to. It is a 6 sped AWTF21 auto transaxle

Well, the news is not good here.
First thing you can do is draw some fluid out to inspect. If it is pitch black, the trans is history.
You could try changing the fluid just to see if it helps but if it’s already black, new fluid would just be pouring your money down the drain. At this point it can’t really get any worse.

The problem with automatics is that when they have signs of serious slippage, your only real options are either a rebuild or pass the car to the next lucky owner.

You could take it to a shop for diagnostics in hopes maybe something electrical but do not be surprised when they say it needs to come out for an internal inspection.

Thank you for your response. I figured that this was my result as well, but I want a second opinion before removing the transmission. Wishful thinking more/less. But looks like i will be shopping for transmissions. I am considering keeping this transmission and rebuilding it own my own, after changing it. Just interested in learning more about these transmissions and no better way to learn than hands on experience. Looks like i have a future project that i am going to experience. B)
