I have a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I was on my way home one afternoon and every time I would try to accelerate (anything more than 1/8-1/4 on the pedal) it felt like it was missing. Driving it the next few days I narrowed it down to only when the truck shifted into overdrive. This was a while ago, yesterday on the way to the gas station it just kind of gave out and was missfiring pretty badly. The check engine light began to flash (missfire detected according the manual). I limped to a neighbor’s house, he put a OBDII sensor and it said there was a missfire on the No. 1 cylinder. He and I did a little poking around. The plug wire seemed to be getting good spark and all the others were firing fine. I need help. Does anybody have any clue as to what it could be?
      Thanks-Matt

The first thing to do is to remove the spark plug and inspect it for oil or carbon build up. If it looks good switch it with the cylinder beside it to see if the misfire changes to a different cylinder. If the misfire moves to the other cylinder then the spark plug is bad.
If the same cylinder continues to misfire then you either have a bad injector, vacuum leak or a mechanical engine problem.

I want to add to that Bill. That engine in question is a COP (coil on plug) style engine. If moving the plug makes no change, next swap that coil out with another one and see if the miss moves to that cylinder, if it does (and I have a feeling it might) it is a bad coil or boot. When you pull the coil to check the plug inspect the boot very carefully for white spots, that is a sign the spark is firing through the boot to ground out on the wall.

          Indroduction to Ford COP design.

if you’ve checked the coil packs And they are all fine And check the spark plugs maybe change that for new ones. the next step is a compression test which eric has a link for how to do thisboth have a good look around for any vacuum leaks

LOL, I saw that, but I have seen those coil packs work great with no load (sparking in open) and than fail when stressed. That’s why I suggested moving it and seeing if there is a difference.

I caved and took the truck to a friend of mine. When I know what my problem was I will post on here again. Sorry for not responding, I did read your posts, just did not respond. Thank you guys for the help.

Soak it with soapy water and shut the lights off. Listen and look for a popping sound. You may have good spark from the coil and wires but it may be arching to the block under load.
