I recently broke the timing chain on my 2005 chevy cavalier ecotec 2.2 broke the front guide and broke the bottom guide bolt off. I was wondering how I can repair this thought of drilling the old bolt out but not sure how far in I can drill. can you help me with this so I don;;t ruin the block by drilling in to far or if it will not ruin something if I do drill in to far. Thanks Bill

        1. Did you try a repair and break bolts?

Sounds to me like he snapped off one of the bolts that hold one of the guides in place. Your only luck will be an easy out more than likely. Those bolts are torqued ranging from 71lb-in to 108lb-in depending on the bolt. Good luck

According to what iv been reading the 2005 ecotec is a interference engine meaning that if it jumps timing or the chain breaks the pistons will make contact with valves bending or breaking them.

You might have more problems than just a broken bolt.

                1. Get VIN number and call dealership to see if engine is Interference/NON Interference
                2. Do you have broken bolt?

that’s not my concern right now I have replace all the valves and head which did bend 4 valves all that has been taken care of my concern is the bolt that sheared off on the chain guide and not sure how far in I can drill without damaging the block.so I can re thread it and put a new bolt in.

Get a new bolt and use it as guide to determine how far you can drill, taking the missing length of the damaged bolt into account. Mark your drill bit with tape or use a depth stop.
