      🙁

Hello! I’m SOO thank ful for this site, Eric, THANK YOU!!! I’m NOT the typical don’t know anything about cars type of lady… I can change a tire and do basic other stuff. However, I am a little nervous about a road trip I plan to take come mid Spring/Summer. I am moving back home to Jersey from Missouri & I need an idea of what I need to take care of before I head out on the 18 hour drive. I’m stopping half way, in Michigan to visit friends but would like some peace of mind on the trip. I have a 2005 Dodge Neon, engine miles 155k. I am the 3rd owner of the vehicle. I have been using it almost daily since December without any problems. About 20 miles a day to/from work. Every now and again I feel a bit of hesitation under the hood, when I go about 25-35mph. It isn’t all the time, but still. I think it may have something to do with the spark plugs? Mainly am concerned about WHAT should I worry about BEFORE I head out on my trek back home. And what should I bring with me just in case… other than a spare tire!… or two. :o) Thank you for your help!!

Has the timing belt and water pump on this vehicle ever been changed? What was the mileage on it when you got it?

Many shops can do a PMI check up and let you know what should be a concern. PMI stands for Preventative maintenance inspection. Some of the things they look at are tires for wear, brakes, filters, fluid color and level, timing belts, accessory belts, fluid leaks, suspension, looseness in steering, and various other items. Many shops give these inspections for free or for a very nominal fee. (Most I have seen in my area is 35 dollars.) Have it done at the dealer or a repair shop, not your local quick lube. Knowing the neons pretty well, if it where me, I would make sure the timing belt and water pump where inspected closely. This is an interference engine. Meaning if the timing belt breaks, or slips a tooth, it will cause serious internal damage to the motor. Also prior to your trip, I would take some time and run some good fuel system cleaner in the engine. other wise see what your local repair shop recommends. All in all I think you will be good for the trip.

The mileage was 154k almost 155k when I purchased it in October but I barely used it until December. I have no idea if those two things have been changed.

They should have been changed at 100,000 miles. If they weren’t you are on borrowed time and could have serious engine break down and damage that will take that car off the road. Not knowing whether they have been changed the prudent thing to do would be to get both the timing belt and water pump changed before you make that trip. It’s not cheap, but will provide peace of mind during the trip and be much less expensive than if you break down on the road and are faced with the tow truck expense and finding a place to stay and what ever else you may need to have done. I’ve got 2 Neons, one with 140,000 and one with 290,000 miles.
