New here but i have followed erics vids for awhile now and has helped me a lot. so here we go…I have a 2005 chevy impala 3.4L with about 120k miles on it. I am running into a issue to where i am driving, coming to a stop and even with it running but in park the car shuts off. The car loses some power right before it shuts off. Fires right back up with ease, will die multiple times during a drive…It does happen at random times not noticed a pattern in which the issue happens. The only code it is throwing is for the o2 sensor ( forgot the code it self sorry). I Cleaned the maf today hoping to fix the issue,,but no luck that i have noticed. I was thinking maybe a clogged fuel filter, injector. maybe fuel pump going out. I am just at a lost here.

Try disconnecting the sensor and see if it still happens.

i pulled off the maf and cleaned it and also run it for about 30 mins and no change, so i went ahead and unplugged it and ran about 30 mins as well, also no change.

With a scanner see what the upstream o2 sensor voltage is doing.
should be changing rapidly. If you could post the code you got for
the o2 that would be helpful.

I think it’s your fuel filter.

Think about this the filter has loads of crap in it, the fuel is being dragged through the filter in one direction. The crap builds up in the exit port end and the engine is starved of fuel looses power and stalls.

Once stalled there is no suction holding the crap on the exit port, it falls back and open the fuel supply. Car runs for a bit and it happens again and again….

I’ve seen this before, but you threw me with the O2 sensor. However with that disconnected and the problem persisting. It’s not the O2 sensor.

I’m 99% certain it’s a fuel issue and most likely at the filter.

              What do you think?

Checking the O2 sensor operation is a good idea. The computer uses that signal to calculate the fuel mixture after the engine warms up. That said, if it’s faulty, it could be messing up the fuel mix enough for it to stall. Also a good idea to check for vacuum leaks. This can also cause a slow response code and stalling. More info on solving performance problems here.

If you expect a fuel delivery issue then I would recommend checking fuel psi and checking it against spec to verify that. More info on that in the above article.

Good luck and keep us posted.

sorry for not getting back to you guys. Work and life events……

Anyway quick update. The Trouble code is bank 1 sensor 1 p0135. As for the Maf, I unhooked the maf and drove the car for 50 miles. The car didn’t shut off during operation during the 50 miles ( didnt drive for 50 strait miles, span of 2 days) and it didn’t seem to run any worst then what it did before the current issue.

I have a simular problem with my ’01 Impala. However, mine isn’t random stalling it’s stalling out upon starting after driving it. to prevent it from stalling out I give it gas and it stays running. It is not throwing codes as the CEL is not on however I too suspect the fuel filter in both our cases. Mine has the 3.8L My question is where is the fuel filter?

Sounds like to me from your last post that it could be a bad MAF. they are pretty inexpensive so you wouldn’t be out much by just replacing it. Fuel Filters also are inexpensive. replacing those two things should fix it.

Also you do most likely have the GM’s Ignition Switch recall on it. I am not sure if that effected the 3.4Ls I am waiting for my appointment at the dealer to get my recalls done and I will see after that if the problems for me persist. Do let me know if you find a fix for it as I will look into it as a possible cause for me assuming that the recalls don’t clear it up.

I know this was stated before, but you need to follow through with this diagnosis to properly diagnose your issue.
                      http://www.ericthecarguy.com/faq/solving-automotive-performance-issues?start=1#TheBasics

If I remember DTC P0135 is the heater circuit in the O2 sensor…that needs to be addressed first.

For a quick diagnosis of the MAF is unplugging it….. Unplugging the MAF causes the PCM to rely on other sensors to operate.

For complete diagnosis maybe this will help…

Ignition switch problems is a problem on the Impala also; the B+ wire from the ignition switch to the PCM and BCM intermittently has a bad connection and causing the car to stall.

Mine has the 3.8L My question is where is the fuel filter?

The 2001 Chevrolet Impala’s fuel filter can be found underneath the passenger side mounted on the frame just in front of the fuel tank.
