The steering is really loose on my ’05 Cavalier. I just bought it, put new tires on it, and had it aligned. Every time there is a strong side wind, a dip or rise in the road it really throws the car off course and I have to over correct to get the car back straight. When I correct I have to turn the wheel so much it then goes the other direction so I have to correct for that. So if there’s a strong wind I will zigzag down the highway like a drunk driver. What is causing this? They mentioned nothing when I did the alignment.

the roads suck here and it blows 50-75 mph cross winds here in wyoming,my vote is look at your struts/shocks if they have lost their dampening you could be blown all over the road and it wont handle bumps at all.

okay so I think all it’s just old struts. so my next question is…
I replaced the struts all the way around on my Ford Taurus and it caused the strut mounts to go out and I think it was the cause for the ball joints to go out. If I replace the struts on this Cavalier is there any way I can get away w/ doing only the struts or should I get a quick strut and save myself the trouble of doing everything twice?

Get the quick strut and save the headache, btw you should change the upper strut mount anyway when the strut is changed

So I finally replaced the front struts on the Cavalier and that’s what was causing it for sure. I’ve never seen suspension so bad. There was no resistance what-so-ever; when I pushed them down they stayed down. lol
Didn’t know that bad suspension could cause such problems.
              Thanks everyone for your help.

GLAD TO HEAR! I am amazed by the face struts could to that too. Good to know it is fixed.

GM actually has a tsb on the intermediate shaft on these cars. When I worked as a gm tech i replaced hundreds of them doing this same exact thing. I’d replace the intermediate shaft, it’s easy and you should not effect the alignment seeing as how they have a keyway to make sure you line it up right.
