Hi Guys, this isn’t a major problem but I would just like a point in the right direction. This only happens when my car hasn’t warmed up (cold). Say when I reverse out of my driveway and accelerate to jump into a gap, it feels down on the power then all of a sudden after a good five seconds it kicks it up a gear and just jumps into that power, but it happens only until the car is warmed up, then it has full power from any stop. Could this be a fuel issue? or a sensor issue? as its only when the engine is cold. Car only has 80,000km on the clock and is a 2ZZ-GE engine.

FYI: Has had an oil & filter change, Air Filter replacement and new Cabin filter just to rule those things out. – Haven’t done the spark plugs but if that could cause this, would be great to know to.

      Any pointers would be great.

A “tune up” could help your performance issue. I would start there. Start plugs wires, dis cap and rotor etc if they haven’t been replaced you notice a difference after replacing them. Also clean you Mass Air Flow sensor it is crazy how it can improve performance. Watch this video.

Hi exceptionalchris, thank you for your reply. My car doesn’t have a distributor, it just has coil packs – Sorry I should have mentioned that. I did clean the Air Flow sensor with special MAF cleaner a while ago while still facing this issue which didn’t seem to do too much.

No problem. No check engine light right? You can try some fuel treatment or manually cleaning the injectors. it not to complex. i imaging they wont be too dirty beacuse you can have low miles. but it will help.

No check engine lights or codes. Once the engine is up to normal operating temperature it runs beautifully and has all of its power.

Before jumping in and starting to remove the fuel injectors; inspect/replace your spark plugs (I recommend only Denso!) and check your PCV valve. If you pull your injectors at your mileage there is a very high probability you will have to replace all the O-rings. Not really that expensive, but it can be money spent for nothing. As far as in-tank treatment of fuel injectors, I consider them all to be snake oil. The only proper way to clean a fuel injector is to clean it on rail, or remove them completely and clean them individually.

Since you are having this problem with a cold engine (thus probably still being in open loop, I would doubt it is a MAF issue). Just for general knowledge when you clean the MAF ensure you are cleaning it properly by removing it from the vehicle. Many times I have talked to people who have only sprayed down the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor (the red/amber bulb. What needs cleaned are the wires that you have to look down into the plastic area for.

This shows the Intake Air Temperature sensor location, and where on the MAF intake it really should be cleaned.

I recommend you check your plugs and PCV valve and get back with us.

                Cheers

Thanks very much for your reply, I’ll check those things out and let you know how it goes. I’ll post some pictures of the plugs too. That MAF sensor is exactly the same as the one I have, so I will try cleaning it again. I did actually have a go at cleaning it a while back with no luck.

Hi Guys, Quick update… Haven’t got around to taking out the plugs yet, but I noticed when I start the car on a cold night to put it away, if you hold the revs say 2500 – 3000rpm you can see and her the needle fluctuate a bit. Doesn’t do that when its warmed up. Could that be pointing to anything obvious??

                    Cheers

I would suggest searching for a vacuum leak when the car is
cold and first started. (Intake manifold) Also monitor the
front o2 switching if you have a scanner.

Thanks college man, I’ll have a look at that when I inspect the plugs. I’ll grab a scanner and take a look. Am looking at voltage change for the O2?

                        Cheers

watch the voltage to see how rapid it switches and
watch to see how long it takes to start switching.

Hi Guys, just an update… I have had a search around for vacuum leaks and haven’t found any. Also I noticed when you hold the RPM at say 2000 when its running cold, you can see the rpm gauge move up and down slightly… What could this mean?

Your car could have an Air/Fuel ratio sensor and not an o2 (Lambda) sensor. Testing that is a whole new deal. Does it have 4 or 5 wires?
